How do others view this character?
Most of the Aperture team view him as a joke, or someone to pity. Formerly a highly respected physicist/portal theoretician, he helped quite a lot in the theories of how portals worked. It was he, alongside Dr Keller that theorised that a portal forms an instantaneous travel tunnel though what he called "shadowspace". This allows the portals to link from anywhere, and to maintain their integrity without an outside generator. Keller also theorised that if you ever managed to get a single portal to open, without the presence of another portal to connect to, you would be able to see inside this shadowspace.

During an experiment to test this, they managed to open a single portal, but it became unstable and almost destroyed the facility. Before this happened, Professor Steinman looked directly into the shadowspace portal. No one knows what he saw, but from that moment on, he had practically lost his mind. He would not speak, save for occasional spouts of madness about the "creatures in the shadows". They kept him on at Aperture, because he was a good worker, and he still does any calculations they give him. He roams about the facilities when he isn't working, looking around everywhere, jumping at shadows, fearful he may encounter those creatures again.
